Medical School: University of Alabama

I was born and raised in Vietnam. My family and I immigrated to the US when I was 9 years old. We settled in Mobile, Alabama. I attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology as well as my medical degree.  I was the first person in my family to graduate from college.

Since elementary school, one of my biggest interests has always been science. It wasn’t until after my high school human anatomy and physiology class that I really became interested in the field of medicine.  I specifically chose to go into emergency medicine because of the large variety of patients and pathology I get to see every day. I am also drawn to EM for the many opportunities for performing procedures.

The Christus Spohn Memorial EM program is a wonderful rarity. Because the only other residency program here is family medicine, EM residents are the only ones running trauma codes and managing airways. We also get all of the procedures in the ER. The small class size really helps us to become a close knit family. The high faculty to resident ratio here makes you feel like you’re never lost in the crowd and when needed there is always someone available to talk to. Also, for beach lovers, this is the place to be.

My hobbies include anything that takes place outdoors. I like hiking, camping, boating, and stargazing with my telescope when I have time. My favorite sport is tennis. I played tennis in high school as well as intramural tennis in college.  I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to see some of the greatest players in the world compete at the US Open in New York City in 2013.  One of my goals in life is to be able to attend all four of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments.
