Howdy!
I was born and raised in Texas, so if you're from out of state, welcome! Texas is a great place, full of natural treasures from the plains and mountains of the western part of the state to the Hill Country and rivers in the center, to the beautiful forests and beaches of the eastern edge. Not everybody says "howdy", but I like to think of our state, and our residency in particular, as one of the friendliest places around!
I grew up in San Antonio, about two hours north of Corpus Christi, and spent a lot of time in the CorpusChristi/Port Aransas area as well as the Rio Grande Valley as a kid. I went to college at Texas A&M University in College Station and eventually returned to San Antonio for medical school. Along with my stereotypical Texan interests in hunting, country-western dancing, and spending time in the great outdoors, I enjoy reading about European history (my BA is in history), going to movies, rock climbing, comics, and spending time participating in various activities in the local Catholic diocese.
I bet you're already familiar with the amazing specialty that is Emergency Medicine, and I'm excited to show you around our program! It truly is a unique experience: a relatively small program with a large volume of high acuity patients that we share with only one other residency program. Even having been here only a short while, my clinical expriences in the ED and inpatient services have surpassed expriences at larger academic programs. Our faculty and family medicine colleagues have been a pleasure to work with, and from day one of orientation, when I stated out knowing nobody, the faculty and residents have welcomed us like family. They are invested in us, and we in them, not only as future Emergency Medicine physicians, but as people. It has been such a blessing to work in such a supportive environment, in a Catholic health system committed to the underserved population of South Texas who I want to work with in my career, and with the ocean never far away!
